We Built a Country

It may take a village to raise a child, but it only takes a few creative kids to build a country. Based on the book,How to Build Your Own Country by Valerie Wyatt, students in Mr. Hazel's class took an idea...and turned it into a class project. Using what they've learned in Social Studies over the course of the year, students embraced the challenge of building a society from scratch.

After researching and discussing the characteristics of the United States and Italy, the children had a better idea of how to get started. It began with a name. Some groups chose a name that embodied what their country stood for, as in Valoria (valor). Other groups chose another route, and used the first letters of their name, as in BELK (Breanna, Ella, Lauren, Katie).

Once a name was chosen, members created a motto, emblem, and flag. Then, they drew their country outline, filled it with various landforms, and calculated the area and population of their country. When that was done, students created the country's currency, chose a form of government, made laws, and wrote a constitution.

What came next? Well, a national anthem, of course. Yes, they had to write and sing it before the whole class...and their parents! Just before their final presentation, each group had to design clothing for their country and make a list of holidays to celebrate.

Throughout the process, the children really learned how important division of labor can be.
