What My Mom Says

Young Poet

My mother says, “Pick up your room.”
She says it every day.
I told her it was too heavy to lift.
That’s what I always say.
“Drink up your milk,” my mother said.
She knows I’ll answer that.
I say, “I’d rather drink it down.”
Then, I gave it to the cat.
“At 8:00 you must go right to bed,” she says. She says that every night.
I said, “I’d rather go left instead.”
And, then I turned out the light.
