WDES's Outdoor Learning Enviroment
The third grade outdoor learning environment, OLE is designed to enrich the school community with an outdoor sustainable garden that fosters the natural interactions between people and the land. The OLE is an exciting way for students to learn about science. The Outdoor Learning Environment features an herb garden, pumpkin patch, several flower beds, a section dedicated in the remembrance of former student Grace McGrath and seating for classes and special events. The OLE enhances the third grade curriculum. It allows students to see how the seeds, bulbs, and plants survive in their environments. It also reinforces the structures of plants such as the roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Students are able to determine how plants survive and grow. They get to watch plants develop through the distinct stages of the life cycle. It also allows students a hands on approach to explore texture, capacity to hold water, and components of soil and soil’s ability to support the growth and survival of many plants.
