Students Travel to New York to See Broadway Musical
Students in the Fine Arts department had an amazing opportunity to travel to New York City over the Memorial Day weekend to see the new Broadway smash hit musical, Newsies. Sun Valley theatre teacher Lisa Stafford has a friend in the show, Mark Aldrich, who plays the role of Seitz and other roles in the ensemble. Ms. Stafford traveled to New York City over spring break to see the show. When her students discovered that Ms. Stafford knew an actor in a Broadway show, they asked if they could make a trip to New York to see it. Ms. Stafford, with the help of Mr. Reynolds and Mrs. Mitchell, put together this trip for the 23 students and 6 adults. Ms. McCall, who had never been to New York, was also able to join the group on the trip.
Mark and some of the other actors from the show, including actress Kara Lindsey who plays the female lead Katherine Plummer, spent time with the Sun Valley students after the show talking about their background and the audition process for the musical. The actors also gave the students advice for their future careers in the arts. Some students also took in a second show, Sister Act, on Saturday night with Mrs. Mitchell and Ms. McCall.
While in New York City, the group also took a ride on the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. They made a moving visit to the 9/11 Memorial on Sunday morning. Other activities of the weekend included visiting Strawberry Fields in Central Park, shopping in Times Square and Canal Street as well as 5th Avenue and Grand Central Station.
