Commencement Celebrated for Class of 2012
The Class of 2012 celebrated their Commencement on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Cabarrus Arena. The class celebrated many accomplishments, including earning over 463 college scholarships totaling over $20 million. As class vice-president Kacey Williams wished for the Class of 2012, we hope all the graduates “go out into the world, sparkle, shine, and show everyone what Piedmont High School has to offer!”
Brittany Pigg sang the National Anthem to open the ceremony and class president, Kirby Haigler, welcomed family and friends. He welcomed special guests who included Rick Pigg, David Scholl, Dr. Mary Ellis, Dr. Wanda Little, and Dean Arp. Raven Hensley and Kelli Phillips sang “Already Gone” by Sugarland. Secretary Dallas Clontz then gave her reflections on her high school experience. Clontz left the class with this advice, ”Whatever you do , wherever you go, go there with all your heart.”
Davis Dixon, class treasurer, welcomed Tradd Medford, guest speaker and former teacher at Piedmont High School. Mr. Medford echoed the theme of many commencement speakers: “Find something in your life that you are truly passionate about and pursue it passionately. “ He stressed that it takes more than just passion to pursue a goal…it’s the ability to positively orient your attitude that is important. Mr. Medford noted that he is a big believer in attitude! He reminded the graduates of a quote that hung on his board for his 13 years at Piedmont. The quote was by Chuck Swindoll and read “Attitude…the longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.” He left the graduates with this thought…10% of life is what happens to you and 90% of life is how you react to it. He encouraged graduates to choose to have the best attitude possible and be contagious in a positive way with their attitude.
Mr. Jonathan Bowers, principal, recognized the many accomplishments that the Class of 2012 achieved before assistant principals Dr. Ann Walters, Steve Campbell, and Donita Gregory awarded diplomas to the graduates. After Brittany Bunch and Brittany Evans sang “Never Grow Up”, class vice-president Kacey Williams gave the wish for the Class of 2012. Williams wished for the Class of 2012 that “you see the world as your own personal playground… Let’s go out into the world, sparkle, shine, and show everyone what Piedmont High School has to offer!” Congratulations to the Class of 2012!
