Superintendent Mary Ellis addresses parents and the community
Dear Union County Parents/Community,
Today begins my role as superintendent of the Union County Public Schools, a job for which I am very honored and humbled to have been chosen. I’m also very excited about the years ahead.
I want to make one thing very clear; all decisions that I make will follow these questions: “Is this decision the best one for the child? Is it the right decision? Would I make this decision if my child were sitting there? Is it legal, moral and ethical?”
My first order of business as superintendent is to make sure there is a seamless transition. Everybody matters, but the bottom line is – it’s the children who we’re looking after, with a team spirit and camaraderie throughout the system.
I am dedicated to continuing the G.I.G. initiative (Globalization, Innovation and Graduation). Our preliminary test scores look really good, as do our AMOs (Annual Measureable Objectives). We’re still on the right pathway, and we did that in spite of all of the uncertainty of this past year. As for our graduation rate, I plan to look for any pockets of students that we are missing and then find out what we need to do differently for these children in order for them to graduate.
We face many challenges, with the economy driving most of the challenges. By our hard work and our working together, I know we’re going to do great things for children.
I look forward to the years ahead. We were a good school system. We are now a better school system. We are the best in some categories, but not all of them. My goal is for us to get there. With your support, we can make that happen.
Mary Ellis, Ed.D.
