UCPS year-round school gets off to smooth start

Students at Monroe Middle School receive their new class schedules on the first day of Year-Round Schools.

Students returned to year-round school Monday (July 23, 2012) ready to begin the 2012-2013 school year.

According to UCPS Assistant Superintendent Shelton Jefferies and UCPS Safety Director Jarrod McCraw, there were no problems reported at either the schools or with the UCPS school buses.

Benton Heights Elementary School was fairly indicative of the first day at all the year-round schools.

“It’s been a very smooth start,” said Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts Principal Blaire Traywick. “I am thrilled to be at [Benton Heights] and look forward to a very successful year. The staff is re-energized and is so excited about doing what they do best: educating children!”

There are seven year-round UCPS schools: Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts, East Elementary, Shiloh Elementary, Walter Bickett Elementary, Monroe Middle School, Walter Bickett Education Center and Wolfe School.

Students who attend school on the traditional calendar will begin school Aug. 27, 2012. Union County Early College students begin classes Aug. 1, 2012.
