Seventeen cadets from the Air Force JROTC unit NC-955, comprised of students from Piedmont and Porter Ridge High Schools, attended The Eagle Challenge Summer Leadership School at Smith Mountain Lake State Park located near Roanoke, Virginia from July 29 – August 3, 2012. During the weeklong camp, the cadets experienced team building exercises, challenge courses, climbing, rappelling, ropes course, swimming, archery, rifle marksmanship, robotics lab, computer lab, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, outdoor living, survival training, drill, sports, physical conditioning and much more.

Several cadets held leadership positions (Cadre) assisting and directing more than 110 cadets from three states. The following students were part of this: Kendyll Dellinger – Squadron Commander; Hunter Locklear – Physical Training Lead; and Kahlil Fewell – Bravo Flight Commander. In addition to the activities, cadets also competed for awards in leadership, neatness, fitness and teamwork. NC-955 cadets proudly garnered the following awards:

Hunter Locklear – Top Cadet (#1 out of 110 cadets)
Mackenzie Whiteley – Charlie Flight’s Top Cadet (#1 out of 15 cadets)
Charlie Flight’s Top Female Fitness Award Recipient
Isaac Nelson – Overall Neatness Award Runner-up (#2 out of 110 cadets)

The following Cadets also graduated from the Leadership School: Amanda Ferguson, Jeff Gordon, Daniel Kelley, Maggie McBryde, Kelby Oakes, Laura Ordonez, Porter Garrett, and William Trull.

According to Chief Holmes, “The Cadets did a great job at camp. Hopefully, they will take all the information and skills learned back with them to Piedmont and apply it to the ROTC program.”
