UCPS educators prepare for start of 2012-13 school year
Teachers across the county are getting their classrooms ready for next week’s start of the 2012-2013 school year.
Union County Public Schools on the traditional calendar will begin Monday, August 27, 2012, while year-round UCPS schools began July 23.
Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA) English teacher Aimi Gundersen, math teachers Elizabeth Gaither and Del Bradshaw, and business information technology teacher Beth Lingle, like hundreds of other UCPS teachers, have been working hard for the past couple of weeks to get their classrooms ready for students.
From updating pacing guides to developing syllabi and lesson plans, teachers are trying to get it all done before the school bell rings Monday.
“There’s a lot of curriculum planning because the state has the New Standard Course of Study,” Gundersen said. “The new curriculum is going to be interesting. It’s vertically aligned, so it makes a lot of sense. It’s just learning something new. It’s change, but a good change.”
“We’ve also got this new one-to-one laptop initiative in the schools so all the ninth graders will come with laptops,” Gaither added. “So it’s just such a different year.”
Another new piece of technology for CATA teachers is the Smart Board. “They really help to engage the students because it’s interactive and they can come up and be involved,” Lingle said. “It’s for them to use and touch.”
