UC Youth Travel Club Travels Abroad

Mrs. Pentecost poses with a koala bear in Australia.

This past summer the Union County Youth Travel Club adventured to New Zealand and Australia. Four students started their experience by traveling 24 hours to New Zealand on June 20, 2012. It is winter in that part of the world with temperatures ranging from 30-70 degrees. It made it interesting to pack as we only bring a carry-on.

The New Zealand's countryside was absolutely breathtaking. We went to Tarlton's Aquarium, gazed at the Glow worms in the Waitomo caves, rode some extreme rides, went to a sheep farm, learned about the indigenous Maori people's art and traditions, and saw the geysers of Rotorua.

In Australia we were able to see the city life. Of course with an all girl group, we shopped. Sydney is a beautiful harbor. We went whale watching, took a harbor cruise, saw the famous Bondi beach and toured the well known Opera House. The Taronga Zoo was the highlight for Sydney.

We purchased a behind the scene tour which focused on the Australian animals like the Koala, kangaroos and wallaby's. We flew to Cairns where we went horse back riding in the rainforest and through deep water, spent a cold afternoon on a beach, and then a turbulent ride to the Great Barrier Reef where some of us went scuba diving and some went snorkeling. It was amazing!

The trip lasted 13 days. Quite an experience how people in other parts of the world live. Our next trip is scheduled to Italy in the summer of 2014. If you are interested please come to our parent/student informational meeting on Thursday, September 20th. The meeting will start at 6:30 in CATA's art room (102), across from the library.
