Heroes Day in First Grade
In remembrance of September 11th, first graders at Porter Ridge Elementary spent the week talking about heroes. The students learned what makes a person a hero and what makes that person heroic. The first graders spent the week writing letters to the local fire department, police department, and soldiers. The students made American flags for all of our heroes and sent pictures to our troops overseas thanking them for protecting our freedom. As part of the Global Gateway Team, the first grade teachers also discussed the importance of heroes in their adoptive countries: England, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. The students enjoyed learning about heroes from different regions of the world and loved pronouncing their names in their country’s language.
The first graders ended their “Hero Week” by dressing up as their favorite hero. We also had an assembly where they listened to a fire fighter, police officer, a nurse and a Marine talk about what it means to them to be a hero. The first grade team would like to thank Mrs. Lockrem, Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith and Mr. Nash for talking the time out of their busy schedule to come to Porter Ridge and talk to our students!
