EC Teachers Collaborate During Monthly Professional Development Sessions

Susan Risk from Sandy Ridge Elementary presents an informative session on working with students with Down Syndrome.

All UCPS Exceptional Children (EC) teachers will meet through January for professional development sessions. EC teachers throughout the district are divided into cohorts based on grade levels and teaching areas. One of the main purposes of EC staff development is to bring teachers from across the county together to share best teaching practice.

During the Elementary Resource Training, Melissa Whitley and Jennifer Privitera, teachers from New Town Elementary, and Susan Risk from Sandy Ridge Elementary presented an informative session on working with students with Down Syndrome. The presentation included teaching strategies learned at the Down Syndrome Conference.

During the Adaptive Curriculum Professinal Learning Communities (PLC) meeting, EC teachers Susan Samsel, Karen Cole, and Ellen LeRoy shared information on Unique Learning Systems, a research based EC curriculum resource. This resource presents materials adapted for all levels of learning. It is also aligned with the Extended Common Core State Standards.

Professional development sessions will continue throughout the year with a wide range of topics being offered for EC teachers.
