Rocky River Global Gateway School
Rocky River’s Second Grade Team will participate for a second year in the Global Gateway program developed by VIF International Education, a Chapel Hill based organization that helps K-12 schools start and maintain language and global awareness programs to develop strong 21st century skills. Through Global Gateway, teachers will transform their classrooms, their grade level, and school into a global learning environment. Teachers on Global Gateway teams collaborate and explore the world with students through the integration of global content, teaching approaches, and instructional technology in the classroom.
The Global Gateway program provides a grade-level inquiry-based global learning environment that will prepare students for success as global citizens. The second grade team will implement global learning experiences for their students again this school year with their focus on Oceania a continent centered on the islands of the tropical Pacific Ocean that encompasses the regions of Australasia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia (mainly Australia and New Zealand) along with other global awareness projects. The inquiry based learning will start with a question. Students will then research/analyze the guiding question and then create a project. After that they will share and reflect about their learning. The first module for the teachers focuses on the value of integrating global content including inquiry, cultural exploration, and world discovery into the classroom. Last year we learned about setting up a culture corner and will continue to add to our corner to share artifacts and information about our inquiry.
To support them in this work, they will participate in VIF’s blended professional development program. Teachers and Principals will engage in professional development modules and collaborate with other Global Gateway teams through VIF’s robust online community and Learning Center throughout the state.
At Rocky River the other grade levels have countries they focus on throughout the year for a global focus throughout the school. Flags hang outside doorways and there is a large map and time display in the hall. The Global Gateway will share their learning with others.
