Band Earns Grand Champion Status

Cuthbertson High School’s band director Todd Ebert (second from right), band captain Jennifer Barber and drum majors Adrienne Messina, Alex Abuaita, and Elizabeth Davidson, celebrate the Mighty Marching Cavaliers’ Grand Champion achievement at the 2012 Providence Cup on October 6 at Providence High School.

The Mighty Marching Cavaliers earned grand champion status for its performance at the 2012 Providence Cup, a marching band competition held at Providence High School in South Charlotte that featured 12 marching bands from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union Counties. The event was held October 6, 2012. In addition to the top honor, the band was awarded first place in its class, first place for general effect, first place for marching and second place for music, all in the AAA category, the competition’s largest.

During marching band season, which operates concurrently with the traditional high school football season, the Mighty Marching Cavaliers perform at all home Cuthbertson Cavalier football games (and select away games) and compete in weekend competitions throughout the Carolinas. While the band has consistently received high marks from judges for various categories of competition since its establishment in 2009, the 2012 Providence Cup win marks its first grand champion achievement.

“Since our first year of competition, the band’s motto has been ‘It’s not about the trophies,’ an approach that allows us to work as a team toward excellence in music and marching with each member knowing his or her effort contributes to the success of the entire band,” said Todd Ebert, director of bands for Cuthbertson Middle and High Schools, who last week was named Cuthbertson High School’s Teacher of the Year for 2012-13.

“Cuthbertson’s supportive administration, band booster organization, and entire community make it possible for the students to participate in enriching experiences that nurture their skill, pride, teamwork and commitment.”

Remaining competitions for this fall are on October 13 at the Chase High School Trojan Tournament of Bands in Forest City, N.C., and on October 20 at the Western Carolina University 2012 Tournament of Champions in Cullowhee, N.C. On November 12, Cuthbertson’s middle school band and high school concert bands will perform by invitation at the 2012 North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) annual convention in Winston Salem.
