Brewer Crowned Miss Piedmont
The 2013 Miss Piedmont Pageant featured 52 contestants competing in the 53rd annual event. The theme of the pageant was Masquerade, and each contestant was asked to decorate her own unique mask for the opening number. The opening number consisted of contestants dancing to Masquerade by The Backstreet Boys on a fog-filled stage while revealing their identity behind the decorated masks.
According to pageant director, Teresa Briggs, “The pageant seeks young ladies who demonstrate leadership among peers, academic excellence, community involvement, an ability to speak publicly, and exhibit grace, beauty, and confidence on and off stage.” Contestants in the pageant were judged on academics, private interview, evening gown, and on-stage interview questions. According to Miss Senior Ella Hill, “Participating in the Miss Piedmont Pageant was an incredible opportunity, and I had an awesome time as a contestant. I learned to have self-confidence, and I stepped out of my comfort zone.”
Miss Emily Briggs was the emcee of the pageant and facilitated one of the most stressful parts of the competition, the on-stage interview. Each grade level went on-stage together and gave impromptu responses to questions ranging from your favorite thing about Piedmont and bullying to what magazine cover you would like to be on. According to Teresa Briggs, “I was very proud of the way all of the contestants handled themselves during the questions. It’s hard to prepare for the questions, but they all answered their questions beautifully.”
After scores were tallied, Miss Piedmont 2012 Maggie VunCannon helped with crowning the winners: Miss Piedmont – Elizabeth Brewer; Miss Senior – Ella Hill; Miss Junior – Maddison Morton; Miss Sophomore – Hannah Rushing; and Miss Freshman – Allison Shew. Kaitlyn Herlihy was also selected as Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic. For the third consecutive year, Dr. Pinsak presented Miss Piedmont with a $1000 scholarship and Miss Senior with a $500 scholarship. “Winning Miss Piedmont was a wonderful experience because the scholarship is helping me go farther in my schooling,” noted Elizabeth Brewer after being crowned.
Elizabeth Brewer will represent Piedmont High School in the Carousel Pageant in November. Congratulations to all the contestants and winners of this year’s Miss Piedmont Pageant!
