CATA students share time with Campus Kids
Students from Central Academy of Technology and Arts took a creative writing project to the next level recently when they created colorful books filled with their stories and then shared those books with preschoolers at the Campus Kids Pre-school.
This collaborative project shared the joy of reading and writing. First the ninth- and 10th-grade CATA students met with the preschool students to learn about the youngsters’ interests. They then transformed the information they had gathered into colorful and engaging books that were designed not only to entertain, but also to teach.
CATA students later shared the books, which contained lessons on such things as counting, honesty, alphabets and colors, with the preschool students. Several of the books used the children and their families and friends as characters in the story.
The meeting was filled with fun, laughter and excitement for both the preschool and high school students. The children were delighted when CATA students told them that the books were theirs to keep.
This integrated project allowed the preschoolers to further develop their language and social skills, and gave the high school students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of story elements and writing for a particular audience.
