Porter Ridge High School Spanish teacher Jessica Garner, the North Carolina Teacher of the Year, is pictured with Vice President Joe Biden during her visit to Washington, DC.

Porter Ridge High School Spanish teacher Jessica Garner, the North Carolina Teacher of the Year, was one of two area teachers honored at the White House April 29, 2010, for being state teachers of the year.

Garner was recognized by President Obama with the other state teachers of the year, including Rock Hill, SC, engineering and computer programming teacher at North Western High School, Bryan Coburn, the South Carolina Teacher of the Year.

During the visit, Obama announced the National Teacher of the Year as Sarah Brown Wessling, a high school teacher from Johnson, Iowa.

Garner said it was quite a thrill to meet the president of the United States. “I shook his hand and had my picture taken with him in the Oval office, and I chatted with him about North Carolina BBQ.”

Garner presented Obama with a signed copy of her father-in-law's book, North Carolina Barbecue, Flavored by Time.

She and other state teachers of the year also met with Vice President Joe Biden at his home.
