Porter Ridge Freshmen Receive Laptops

Kaia Willis examines her new laptop.

Three hundred and twenty-nine Porter Ridge High freshmen picked up their laptops this week during our laptop family nights. On October 16 and 17, Porter Ridge hosted two Laptop Family Nights where 9th grade students could bring a parent to complete the paperwork and watch the video in order to receive one of the new Lenovo laptops being provided by Union County Public Schools.

Students began working with their new laptops on Thursday. Students in Mrs. Williamson’s English class were scheduled to use a computer lab first block, but almost all of her students had laptops. Although they met in the lab, everyone pulled the laptops out and was able to get right to work.

Teachers have been preparing for the new laptop class environment over the last few weeks completing staff development in a blended virtual and face to face class. All faculty members are also participating in monthly training on “Teaching Digital Natives.”

Any other 9th grade student whose parents/guardians were unable to attend one of the family nights may call the school to schedule an appointment for their parents/guardians to complete the paperwork. The process takes about twenty minutes.
