Mrs. Dyroff's Globalizing Lessons
In our Social Studies class students have been learning about the 5 Themes of Geography. We did plus delta charts to find out what we know and what we need to find out about geography. Later on students had different stations to visit related to geography that would help them gather more information about geography. One station had maps and globes, another had "Our State" magazines and one of the stations was my cultural corner “Colombia”. Students started making links between all the stations, started to look at common things and differences, and an inquiry question aroused: How does North Carolina regions compare with Colombia?
We began our project by jotting down what we knew about North Carolina regions. Later we divided students into 3 groups. Each group had to find information about the assigned region (Mountain/Coastal Plain/Piedmont). Students searched the internet to investigate about Colombia's regions to later compare it to one of North Carolina’s Regions. Students found that Colombia is divided into 5 regions but that there were some similarities between:
North Carolina Mountain Region & Colombia’s Andean Region
North Carolina Piedmont Region & Colombia’s Orinoquia Region
North Carolina Coastal Plain & Colombia’s Carribean Region
Students Created Venn Diagrams to compare their assigned regions, and completed their project by presenting to their classmates their findings.
Ms. Dyroff’s students really enjoyed learning about her countries regions and are looking forward to more Globalizing Lessons.
