Captain's Table Fosters Leadership
Bob Gearhart, athletic director at Piedmont, has started a leadership group for student-athletes called Captain’s Table. This group consists of 19 athletes thus far, with the goal of developing them into leaders whom their coaches can respect and whom their teammates and classmates can trust. As wrestler Bryce Braswell states, “I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to gain self-discipline and respect.
The Captain’s Table currently meets every Wednesday to discuss various topics pertaining to leadership. According to Gearhart, “I want to see this group grow and learn how to give back.” Their first leadership initiative has been to read/mentor to students at Unionville Elementary before school. Piedmont swimmer Cori Burdette reflected “I really like what we are doing by going to the school and helping out with the elementary students. We would really like to get more involved with the parents of the Unionville students as well.” The Unionville Elementary leadership opportunity should be a stepping stone to branching out into further activities both on the Piedmont campus and in the community. Braswell noted that “Working with young kids helps you gain a better sense of leadership and keeps our focus in the right direction.”
Since the Captain’s Table is in its infancy stage, the group is growing and they are brainstorming other ways to foster their leadership skills. For more information about the Captain’s Table, contact Bob Gearhart.
