Mrs. Smith's Class Learns about the Celebration of Diwali!

Mrs. Lala and Ashu share Indian artifacts with the class!

The parents of Ashutosh Lala, a second grader in Mrs. Smith's class, recently spoke to the second graders about the Indian celebration of Diwali and the culture of India. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a major holiday in India, the way Christmas is for many Americans.
The students learned about India's national sport, cricket, and its geography. They learned that all 26 states of India have distinct cultures, including different languages from one state to the next, different food, and different clothing.

Mrs. Lala and Ashu wore traditional Indian clothing and also had some on display. Students were able to view other artifacts, including jewelry, a cricket bat, and an Indian flag.

Finally, the girls were treated to a traditional Indian bindi on their foreheads. The students really enjoyed the Lalas' visit and the opportunity to experience the wonderful diversity of our world.
