Local Firefighter Visits Fifth Grade

Students listen as they learn about what it's like to be a firefighter.

Firefighter, Michael Ferreira came to visit the fifth grade.  He started his presentation by sharing his experience of being a part of the army for ten years.  He served in the war in Iraq, he was ranked highly in the army, and was a paratrooper, which means he jumped out of planes.  Mr. Ferreira brought his army helmet, and paratrooper beret, and explained that you need it to protect your head.  It was built with light material, and had a built- in lever for his night vision goggles.

Michael Ferreira explained the process it took to become a firefighter for Charlotte, and he said that being in the army helped him prepare.  He explained how to safely walk into a fire and save others.  Along with his army materials, Mr. Ferreira also brought his firefighting gear.  This included his helmet and heavy, three layer jackets, and boots which protect him from dangerous fires.  He also showed us his gas mask and air tank to help him breathe.
