Choral Arts Students Visit Batte Center

The CHS Choral Arts students attended an All County Chorus event at the Batte Center at Wingate University in October. Senior Harrison Taylor (center) was a featured soloist.

Cuthbertson High School Choral Arts students traveled with our new Choral Director Janet Hall to Wingate University on October 18, 2012, to take part in the High School All County Chorus, a day of rehearsing and an evening performance at the Batte Center. The high school musicians brought to life “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli and “With a Voice of Singing” by Martin Shaw. Senior Harrison Taylor represented CHS as a featured soloist in the evening’s final number “Loch Lomond," a new arrangement by Jonathan Quick of the traditional Scottish tune.

All County Chorus students were selected through an audition process. As members of the All County Chorus, they spent a day perfecting their craft with guest clinician and conductor Craig Estep. Mr. Estep has performed and conducted in 29 countries and 48 states.

“Singing,” he said, “has taken me to the four corners of the globe…” Mr. Estep spoke about the importance of choral music in education and urged the audience to continue to “feed the souls” of our young people by supporting the choral arts in Union County Schools. He supported his philosophy by quoting the text from “Earth Song:"

Sing, Be, Live, See…
This dark stormy hour,
the wind, it stirs.
The scorched earth
cries out in vain:

O war and power,
You blind and blur.
The torn heart
cries out in pain.

But music and singing
Have been my refuge,
and music and singing
shall be my light.

A light of song
Shining strong: Allelulia!
Through darkness, pain and strife, I’ll
Sing, Be, Live, See…

Peace.
