International Thespian Society attends NC Regional Conference
Weddington High School’s Honor Theatre students, known as International Thespian Society (ITS), attended the North Carolina Regional Theatre Conference on November 2nd and 3rd. These 26 students performed two plays for several other high schools as well as the general public. Each play was judged and critiqued on the spot by local professional theatre artists. Over the two days, a total of 16 plays were performed. On Saturday, November 3, the awards ceremony was held. Senior Morgan Somers was awarded Excellence in Acting for females and Junior Ram Sanchez was awarded Excellence in Acting for males. “Hear the Children Cry,” written by former WHS student Sam Bagood, was awarded the Excellence in Ensemble. This play was a powerful message about The Invisible Children and the crimes by the Lord’s Resistance Men and Joseph Kony. Senior Katelyn Burrell was awarded Excellence in Student Direction for “Crimes of the Heart.” This play focused on a family of sisters sticking together through unusual circumstances. The students did an incredible job on the stage, in the booth with incredible sound effects and in the audience.
Each year the regional festival is held in various locations around the state. WHS choose to attend the Children’s Theatre, ImaginON, downtown Charlotte. It was the only location in the state that was held in a professional venue. Our students were fortunate to work with professionals in the Charlotte area both onstage and backstage.
