Mary Speight Chosen PWMS Teacher of the Year

Mary Speight, Band Director PWMS

Mary Speight, band director at Parkwood Middle School, first joined Union County as a student at Sun Valley High School. She went on to pursue a degree in Music Education with a concentration in Instrumental Music, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Appalachian State University. In college, she performed with the Marching Mountaineers, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, "Blazing Bassoons," Gospel Choir, and Honors Wind Quintet. Ms. Speight joined the Parkwood community in 2008 as director of the middle school bands and assistant to Archie Wallace at Parkwood High School. Under her direction, the middle school bands have received Excellent and Superior ratings at North Carolina Music Performance Adjudications, many students have taken part in Solo/Ensemble and Chamber Day festivals, and the Parkwood Middle School Jazz and Pep Bands formed. In addition to teaching, Ms. Speight continues to perform in the community as a bassoonist in Quintessence Wind Quintet and the Carolinas Wind Orchestra at Winthrop University.
