East Students Generously Support Food Drive

Ms. Efird's second grade students pose happily with some of the food items they collected for the food drive. They were the class that collected the most food.

Students at East Elementary School responded in full force to the Kiwanis and Christmas Bureau Food Drive. During the week of November 12th, students brought in non-perishable food items.

“The people didn’t have food and I wanted them to have food to eat,” said Alexis Aguilar, a third grade student in Mrs. Tucker’s class who supported the food drive.

As students brought in food each day, the classes counted the number of items collected and made graphs using the data. The graphs were displayed outside the classroom doors so everyone could keep track of their efforts. At the end of the week, students had collected nearly 800 food items!

Malaysia Guy, a second grade student in Ms. Reiher’s class, enjoyed participating in the food drive. “It made me feel happy to help people,” said Malaysia.

To celebrate their efforts, the class that brought in the most cans was rewarded with a hot chocolate party.  Ms. Efird's second grade class was the class that won.  They brought in 86 food items.

“It was wonderful to see our students on board with helping others,” said Principal Cheryl Lawrence, “The students at East Elementary are amazing students with big hearts!”
