Giving Thanks: Students Walk for a Cure
On November 17, Fashion Club and DECA teamed up for the 2nd year in a row, joining thousands of people in the St. Jude's 5k Give Thanks Walk. The walk takes place annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving at the Charlotte Knights Stadium in an effort to raise money for research to find a cure for childhood cancer. Students join other walkers across the community to participate in the pre-walk festivities including, games, music, and filling out give thanks expression cards to build up excitement for the kick-off. Mrs. Dean, club advisor, explained, "This event provides the students with a great opportunity to gather with other walkers from different walks of life, yet we are all walking for the same cause. It reminds me to reflect on life and truly be thankful as the event is centered around ‘Thanks.’"
St. Jude's Children's hospital is the non-profit organization that Fashion Club has chosen. The hospital provides health care free of charge for all patients. Odyssey Aquinchay, club president, shared, "Walking for a cause has really made me feel that I am giving back to the community, specifically children, as this opportunity provides free health care for them." This event has been a great success and experience for all students. Students are able to fellowship with one another, give their time, money, and exercise all in one event.
