Second Graders Provide a Cultural Lesson
At Thanksgiving we think of pilgrims from England landing on Plymouth Rock in the 1600’s. We forget about the other wayfarers that have made their way to our country in search of freedom and a better life. The second graders of Prospect Elementary took time to explore these other pilgrims that came from all over the world to the United States. Inspired by the book, Molly’s Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen, a young girl learns of her own family’s journey as pilgrims to America from Russia, second grade students took time to learn about their own family. Students and their parents crafted a family tree of their recent ancestors and completed a family survey including family stories and their family’s countries of origin. In the classroom students designed their own pilgrim paper doll, as the children in Molly’s Pilgrim did, to reflect their own cultural heritage. Pilgrims represented countries such as France, Africa, England, Scotland, Poland, Ireland, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala and many others.
