Teachers Visit Global Conference

On October 24 and 25, teachers Bronagh Quinn (Visiting International Faculty) and Pat Snodgrass attended the World View Global Education Symposium in Chapel Hill, NC. June Atkinson, State Superintendent of NC schools, made opening remarks at the conference. The teachers heard other speakers, such as Jeff Stringer (Global Women’s Health) and Ed Gragert (iEARN-USA), and attended sessions that focused on educators integrating global themes in their classrooms. Robin Kirk of Duke University led one of the sessions, Memory Bandits. She spoke of conflict resolution while Tonia Lovejoy (reachtheworld.org) explained how teachers and students may connect with travelers around the world.

Ms. Quinn and Mrs. Snodgrass led a workshop at the school following the conference. Staff members were given information about the sessions that were attended, as well as websites with a global focus for pen pals and lesson plans with instructions on how to access the complete list.

As a result of attending the symposium and the workshop led by Miss Quinn & Mrs Snodgrass, Waxhaw Elementary School is pleased to announce that we will be fundraising for C.H.A.M.P.S International Charity.
C.H.A.M.P.S. stands for Children Against Mines Program. It is a charity dedicated to raising money to buy and train mine detection dogs (MDD’s). These MDD’s are then sent to war torn countries, where children have been affected by lethal landmines and are used to rid huge areas of land of these deadly weapons. They make the land safe for children to play on and clear it to be used for farming once again. North Carolina is currently trying to raise enough money to pay for such a dog and if the state is successful we will have our own ‘Tar Heel’ working overseas, saving lives and contributing to the reconstruction of landmine affected communities.
