Fourth Grader Billy Walker, Jr. Wins School Spelling Bee

East Elementary School spelling bee winner, Billy Walker, Jr., is a fourth grader in Ms. Davis' class.

On the morning of November 30, 2012, fifteen students waited for their turn at the microphone. It was East Elementary’s school spelling bee. Classroom spelling bee champions from every third, fourth, and fifth grade class participated. In grade three, the classroom representatives were: Emalee Chavez, Jayden Howard, Siarra Thomas, Daisy Moran-Estrada, and Araceli Corro. In grade four, the class representatives were Terry Marsh, Kenneth Reid, Billy Walker Jr., Iysis Wallace and Omarys Rosales. Fifth grade participants were Zhia Mosely, Hayle Crowder, Gracie Thomas, Jesus Chavez and Elmer Acosta.

Along with these spelling bee participants, there were judges, the pronouncer and coordinator gathered in the auditorium. Several parents also came to watch the competition and support their children. After participants practiced spelling bee skills such as facing the judges, speaking clearly and saying the word before spelling it, the spelling bee was ready to start. Although students were anxious, they all tried their best. In the last round, Omarys Rosales and Billy Walker were the only spellers who had not been eliminated. The coordinator announced the start of the championship round where Billy would have to spell the next word correctly to be considered the winner.
“And the champion is… Billy Walker, Jr. from Ms. Davis’s fourth grade class,” said the announcer. In the thirteenth round, Billy became East Elementary School spelling bee champion by spelling the word ‘tinkerer’. He will go on to participate in the district spelling bee in January. The East Elementary School community is proud of all of our classroom champions and we wish Billy the best of luck at the district spelling bee.
