NHS Sponsors Blood Drive
The CHS National Honor Society, along with advisers Ms. Marissa Cominotti and Ms. Dawn Dillner, sponsored a Blood Drive through the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas on November 30. Donors received t-shirts that read ‘One Hero - One Donor’ as well as sandwiches and snacks.
“Over 160 people signed up which is impressive! We had a really big interest and they enjoyed the t-shirts and Subway,” said Ms. Cominotti.
Donor Ja-Tonia Smith, a junior, said, “I wanted to help save people. I would assume if I needed blood someone would help me, and besides, it’s the right thing to do.”
“I gave blood because I wanted to help save lives,” said donor Tiffany Black, also a junior.
Another donor was junior Adam Pileski. He smiled, “I wanted to help the community and save some lives. Plus, I got out of class, I got a t-shirt and food – who wouldn’t do it?”
Donor Jalen Young, senior, was asked if it hurt. “Not really,” he said. “It felt like a stick and then a vibration.” Young said he has given blood twice before.
“The drive ran very smoothly thanks to our fabulous student donors and volunteers! It was great to see so many of our students who were unselfish enough to go through a little bit of discomfort themselves in order to help someone else,” said Ms. Cominotti.
The theme of the Community Blood Center is, “We all have the power to heal. It’s in our blood.” According to Ms. Cominotti, 78 units of blood were collected which will help 234 patients. Ms. Dillner and Ms. Cominotti plan another NHS-sponsored blood drive with the CBCC on February 7, 2013. For more information, http://www.cbcc.us/.
