Band and Choral Performances Wow the Audience at Parent Night

Ms. Kessler, music teacher at East Elementary, directs the Fifth Grade Chorus during the holiday music performance.

The Fifth Grade Band and Fifth Grade Chorus each performed for the school community on Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 at the East Elementary School PTO Night. By 6:30 p.m., the auditorium was filled parents, staff and students listening to festive sounds of the holiday season. The students practiced for months in preparation for the holiday concert performance.

Evie Larrimore, fitness teacher at East Elementary, commented, "The chorus sounded great…like they've been singing together for years!” The Chorus, under the direction of Ms. Amy Kessler, sang four selections: “Old Man Winter”, “Minka” (a Russian folk song), “Silent Night”, and “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” In addition to directing the chorus, Kessler is also the general music teacher at East Elementary School.

The band, under the direction of Natassia Lail, played various exercises from their lesson book, and ended the program with “Jingle Bells”. After the concert, 5th grade student Zhia Mosley said, “I want to be in band!” Lail also serves as the band director at Benton Heights, Walter Bickett, Rock Rest, and Rocky River Elementary Schools. She assists at Monroe Middle and the Wolfe School as well.

The concert was a great success and the hard work put in by the students definitely paid off. First grade student Calizia Grier stated, “I liked how everyone was up there doing their best.” Keep up the good work, fifth grade Band and Chorus!!! After the performance, the newly formed PTO provided drinks, cake, and other refreshments to celebrate. They also had a short meeting where they encouraged parents and teachers to regularly attend and become involved in future PTO nights. The next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the East Elementary School auditorium.
