CHS and WHS Team Up to Support Samaritan's Feet
In order to raise awareness of the 300,000,000 children who are at risk of disease, infection, and death, simply due to not owning a pair of shoes, CHS hosted their second annual barefoot basketball game against Weddington High on December 14, 2012. The CHS FCA along with basketball teams from both schools partnered with Samaritan’s Feet in their mission to put 10,000,000 pairs of shoes on children’s feet in 10 years. At $10 per pair; Cuthbertson’s goal was to raise at least $1,000 to send to Samaritan’s Feet to aid in their mission.
“A college coach originally started this,” said basketball coach Michael Helms. Now a lot of high school and college coaches participate in it. Weddington was great to do it with us and their coaches were barefoot as well.”
Students collected donations in shoe boxes at the game, sold tickets for half court shots for $1, and sold cutouts of feet for $1 at lunch and during the game. The feet were displayed on the gym doors.
“I was on a mission trip in Kawira, Kenya, last summer and took a lot of pictures. Most of the children did not have shoes. Their feet were stained with red clay. Their feet were just so dirty. We put floors in their schools because before, when the students sat on them, worms could crawl into their feet and they could get lots of diseases,” said senior Mallory Williamson. Mallory took the photo attached to this feature.
