The bright lights of success are illustrated throughout UCPS

The mantra of “Excellence in all we do” is illustrated throughout Union County Public Schools. Whether the conversation is on academics, athletics, or the arts, the students of UCPS are leading the state. The most recent example of “excellence in action” did not take place in a classroom or on an academic field, it occurred in an auditorium as high school students took their audiences on journeys that spanned the globe as they caused gasps, grunts, grief, and giggles.

The North Carolina Theatre Conference hosts Regional and State Competitions for High Schools across the state. Schools present 45-minute plays and receive feedback from industry experts. This year, UCPS students from Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA), Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Piedmont, Porter Ridge, Sun Valley, and Weddington High Schools competed in the Regional competition.

During competition the students are not allowed backstage until ten minutes prior to the show. The group is escorted backstage and begins to move items out of storage to prepare for the performance. Students are not allowed to cross the start line until the production time starts.

Teachers and technical directors may assist backstage, but may not cross the start/finish line. Shows may not run longer than 45 minutes. All students and set pieces must be in the area behind the starting/finish line(s) until time begins, and return to that area before timing will stop. Only the stage manager’s stopwatch provides the official running time. The 45-minute period includes the time for setting up the stage, performing the play, and clearing the stage.

Four of the UCPS high schools, CATA, Cuthbertson, Sun Valley, and Weddington, each had two different plays competing and each of their plays received Regional Awards. While this strategy allowed more students to participate, it also caused twice as much work for the Theatre Departments of those schools as they sought to support two 45-minute plays.

Mr. Larry Robinson, CATA Theatre Teacher, and Ms. Jessica Bridges, Porter Ridge Theatre Teacher, each received the "Excellence in Directing Award" at the Regional Competition. Mr. Robinson, who also directs the annual Union County Performance Ensemble musical that features students from all UCPS high schools, received the "CC Lipscomb Award for Excellence in Directing" at the State Competition.

Plays from CATA and Cuthbertson High School received the highest regional honor of "Distinguished Play" and earned the opportunity to compete in the State Competition. Both received multiple awards at the Regional and State level.

Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer and poet, said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
