UCPS Board of Education announces committee assignments

Chairman Yercheck has announced Board Members’ new Committee Assignments and named the Committee Chairs. He is pictured during a recent BOE meeting recognizing Cuthberton High School Soccer Head Coach Nelson Garner and his team for being the 2012 2A State Men’s Soccer Champions.

During the December Board of Education meeting, Mr. Richard Yercheck, District Three Representative, was elected as Board Chair. By policy, the Board Chair appoints committees and committee chairs.

“I am excited as I look at our committees for the Board of Education. These are nine highly-qualified people who bring very diverse backgrounds to this board,” said Chairman Yercheck. “As I sat with Vice-Chair Marce Savage to review our members and their personal and professional attributes, the assigning of committees seemed quite natural. I look forward to working with each of these individuals in their specific areas of expertise.”

The Board of Education has five standing committees: Curriculum, Facilities, Finance, Policy, and the Strategic Planning and Technology Committee. All committees of the board are public bodies within the meaning of the North Carolina Open Meetings Law and are subject to all requirements of that law. Committee meeting dates and agendas are posted on the Board of Education website.

Board of Education Vice-Chair Marce Savage, has been appointed to Chair the Curriculum Committee. The Facilities Committee will be chaired by District Two Representative Kevin Stewart. At-Large Board Member Mike Guzman, will chair the Finance Committee and will Co-Chair the Strategic Planning and Technology Committee along with District Five Representative John Collins. Sherry Hodges, At-Large Board Member, will chair the Policy Committee.

Additionally, Board of Education Liaisons were assigned to each of the 14 Union County municipalities, the Union County Board of Commissioners, the Union County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the Union County JobReady Partnership, the Quality Leadership Council, and the UCPS Calendar Committee.

Members of the Board of Education have their new assignments in hand and are ready to get to work. Chairman Yercheck added, “Strong schools make strong communities and I honestly believe that this Board is positioned well to face the challenges that lie ahead.”
