Claire St. Bernard is a Winner!

Rocky River Elementary held it's annual Spelling Bee on Friday, December 7, 2012 in the Media Center. Mrs. Richardson welcomed the anxious parents of the 21 contestants from grades 3-5 and wished the students the best of luck. Mrs. Tunick reviewed the official rules for the spelling bee and reminded students to stay calm and do their best. The students sat side by side waiting for the spelling bee to get underway. One particular student who was excited for the spelling bee to begin, Claire St. Bernard, was the runner up from the previous years spelling bee.

Preperations for the spelling bee began about 2 weeks prior when the study guides were distributed to all third through fifth grade students.  Classroom spelling bees were held and the winner from each class were able to participate in the official school spelling bee.  The runner up from each classroom was as an alternate in case a classroom winner was unable to participate the day of the spelling bee.

The spelling bee lasted 12 rounds when Claire St. Bernard, a fourth grader, won spelling the word EXCEPTION correctly.  The spelling bee runner up was third grader, Daniel Reid Turner.  Claire was the runner up from the previous year and she was determined to win  this year.  Claire studied whenever she could enlisting the help of her parents, twin brother Nathan, and her older sister Alex.  Her family could not be more proud of all that Claire has accomplished.

Claire and Daniel have each won a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online.  Claire will also compete in the county spelling bee on January 16, 2013 at Central Academy of Technology & Arts (CATA).  Claire's advice to other students who hope to be a spelling bee champion is "Have fun with it and do not be afraid to ask questions before and during the spelling bee.  You are allowed to ask for the word to be repeated, used in a sentence, and/or the definition."  Claire used these tactics herself throughout the course of the competition and it paid off.

Rocky River will be cheering Claire on at the county spelling bee on January 16th!
