Paws for Reading Challenge
Mrs. Selvidio's first grade class recently participated in Scholastic Book Company's Paws for Reading Challenge. During this challenge students logged the minutes they read each day onto Scholastic's website. For every 20 minutes our students read, 1 book is going to be donated to Scholastic's book programs for needy children. In November, Mrs. Selvidio's students picked a team, dogs or cats, and worked hard to read each night. Each student then worked with their parents to log onto Scholastic's website, using their personal usernames, and logged their minutes for their team. The contest and program ended on December 14 and in total this first grade class read 3,958 minutes! With that many minutes Mrs. Selvidio's class helped donate 197 books to children in need. The dog team was the winner with each member of that team reading an average of 500 minutes during the five week contest. What an amazing result! Mrs. Selvidio's students have not only learned to care for others by participating in this service project but they have also become better readers as a result. The top reader in her class was Wyatt B. with 805 minutes read during the challenge. Fairview is so proud of the hard work of all the students who participated in this challenge. We know that each child is also proud of how they helped get books into the hands of children in need all over the United States.
