Mrs. Koester's Students Shape Up!

Throughout December, Mrs. Koester's second graders have been constructing geometric shapes. They have created charts to sort the different types of quadrilaterals. This has helped them to understand that quadrilaterals includes several different shapes such as parallelograms, rectangles, and squares. Diagonal lines are used to create new shapes within existing shapes. Students have learned different strategies for finding the midpoints of opposite sides of a quadrilateral and connecting those midpoints in order to create even more shapes. Our geometry students understand that there are three different kinds of angles and use this knowledge to create quadrilaterals as well as triangles.

Please keep your eyes open as you and your child spot geometric shapes, parallel lines, and different kinds of angles that are all around us, so students can make real-world connections with what they are learning in geometry.

Working on shapes.   Hard at work.
