New Salem Elementary School students in Grades 3-5 presented the musical, “It’s Christmas Everywhere” on Monday, December 10, 2012 during two performances held in the school’s auditorium. Under the direction of Mr. Taylor Vancil, New Salem Music Teacher, the program featured an around-the-world celebration of Christmas, exploring carols and traditions from Germany, Japan, Australia, Africa, Mexico, Canada, and Spain.

Student narrators Taylor Faron, Rebecca Kulcsar, Alyson Byrd, Kathryn Coppedge, Taylor Hager, Hanah Thomas were dressed in costume to introduce the song from their respective country. Performing solos were Jaidan Miravite and Piper Smith. Dancers were comprised of four 5th grade girls – Taylor Baker, Kathryn Emery, Bailey Tomberlin, Roxie Owen - choreographed by their teacher Mrs. Brandy McHan.

A special highlight of the afternoon performance was a live broadcast of the musical to New Salem Elementary’s sister school in Buenos Aires, Argentina via Skype, making this a truly “global” experience for all involved. Narration was translated into Spanish for the Argentine students by New Salem students Emily Bartolo, Jose Otero-Hernandez, and Valentina Bermudez-Berdugo.

The musical was a successful learning experience for all students as they discovered the origin of the Advent Calendar, the "Cavalcade of Kings" and other interesting Christmas traditions. New Salem Elementary School prides itself in being a leader in global education through such events as this multicultural celebration.
