Wogan named to USA Today All-American Team

Matt Wogan is the best high school kicker in the nation, according to USA Today. The national newspaper named the Porter Ridge High senior a first-team all-American on Thursday. “It was shocking to hear,” Wogan said. “I was like wait, what?” Wogan is the second football player in Union County history to make USA Today all-American, and the first to make the first team.
Marque Hall made second-team all-USA Today as a senior defensive tackle at Forest Hills High in 2003. Hall remains the most highly-recruited athlete in county history after getting more than 50 Division I offers.
Wogan, who has committed to Oregon, made 11 field goals in 2012, including a 58-yarder that broke the Union County record.
He was 5-of-7 on field goal tries of 50 yards or more, and put 85 of his 95 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. He also averaged 44 yards per punt.
“I thought I had a good year,” Wogan said. “I reached a lot of my goals, but I’m not satisfied. I just want to be more consistent in all phases.
“I want to do my job to the greatest of my ability, and the best way to do that is to train. I trained harder than ever last offseason. It’s proof that hard work works. It’s one of the best quotes I’ve ever heard.”
Wogan had his first touchback in the seventh grade, and his confidence grew after attending a kicking camp heading into high school.
When Wogan stepped on campus at Porter Ridge, he joined a program that had never won more than three games in a season.
In his four years of varsity football, Wogan played in all 57 games and helped the Pirates accumulate a 47-10 record.
The Shrine Bowler played in back-to-back state championships, and says last month’s 39-38 loss to New Bern in the title game will live with him forever.
“People say ‘Well you’re still winners’ and yada, yada, yada, but we lost by one point,” Wogan said. “Seriously? That doesn’t happen very often in a championship game.
The memory is so crystal clear to me, it’s like it happened yesterday. The feelings are still there. It was definitely a stinger, and it still bugs the crap out of us; the whole team and probably the community, too.”
