Third Graders Appreciate Poetry
From Thanksgiving through the winter break, third graders at East Elementary School read many kinds of poetry and each wrote a free verse poem on a topic of his or her choice. On Friday, December 14, 2012, they celebrated the conclusion of the three week poetry unit with a guest speaker. Melissa Lewis, Juvenile Services Coordinator from the Monroe branch of the Union County Public Library, was invited to East Elementary to facilitate the celebration. Groups of third grade students met in the school media center with their teachers to listen to Lewis recite many different types of poetry. Third grade teacher Elizabeth Tucker had the idea of inviting Mrs. Lewis to the school. “It was great for the students to see that poetry is fun and a cool thing to learn about,” said Tucker. “ They really enjoyed Mrs. Lewis and her expressions and how she introduced them to all different kinds of poetry. We appreciate how our community library wanted to help us out!”
During her presentation, Lewis immediately grabbed the students’ attention by reciting a poem from Kermit the Frog, imitating his voice. She wanted the students to know that poetry can not only be read, it can be sung. Rap music is a popular form of poetry and she demonstrated this by rapping lyrics from Run DMC, a famous rap group from the 1980s. Lewis also showed that poems can be happy, sad, funny or can tell even a life story. Third grade students left the media center having been exposed to many of the forms that poetry can take and some suggestions of poets whose work they may wish to read. Third grade student Sophia George said, “We loved listening to Mrs. Lewis. She was really funny and nice. She read poetry fluently and it inspired me to read more poetry. I was really into it and I think all the third graders were too.” East Elementary third graders really appreciated Mrs. Lewis for coming and helping them celebrate the end of the poetry unit.
