Determination Tastes Sweet

Caroline, Kate and Ian enjoying some fun celebrating their accomplishments.

Marvin Elementary 3rd graders began 2013 with a celebration.  It didn’t involve fireworks, sparkling cider, or a new year’s resolution, because this was a celebration of accomplishment.

Over the past two months, students have been earning parts of an ice cream sundae for completing timed tests on multiplication facts 0-12 with 100% accuracy.  For each test that a student passed, the child got a different part of the sundae.

For example, pass the test on the 2’s…and they earned a banana; pass the 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s…and they earned scoops of ice cream. The mission: do whatever it takes! There were many restless nights singing songs, playing games, and of course…drilling themselves with flash cards.

Well, that determination recently paid off. It’s been a time of chocolate covered faces and whip cream moustaches, but the cherry is finally on top of the sundae. The end result…Mission Accomplished! Congratulations 3rd graders…now the fun has just begun.
