The Lunch Project

Second Grade listens to Rebecca Wolford, the director of The Lunch Project.

Antioch has partnered with THE LUNCH PROJECT this year. It's an organization that raises money to provide lunches to students at Lamenyanta Primary School in Tanzania for just nine cents a day. The school population is made up of 950 students from impoverished families, many of whom travel 3-5 kilometers to and from school each way. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 100:1. Attendance rises on days when lunch is provided for these students. These hot lunches provide students with one nutritious meal a day, which makes them better equipped to learn.

Antioch has raised money for The Lunch Project through several fundraisers so far this school year. In October, we raised $348 through the 'keep the change' drive at the book fair. In December, the second grade students made posters and went on the morning broadcast to promote the Lunchskins sale. These sandwich pouches were a great way to donate to a good cause AND 'go green.' Our Antioch families purchased 67 Lunchskins to support The Lunch Project. We also held our 'Dime a Day' drive, asking student to send in a dime each day (or more!) to be donated directly to The Lunch Project. We raised $300, which, in addition to the Lunchskin sale, will provide 6,348 lunches to 900 students for seven days.

The first week in January, Antioch second graders met with Rebecca Wolford, the director of the Lunch Project, to learn more about Tanzania and the Lamenyanta Primary School.  In her presentation, Rebecca taught students more about the culture, geography, animals, language, and daily life at the Lamenyanta Primary School.  Mr. Barrett and Ms. Anderson even tried on traditional Tanzanian clothing.

We are still working towards our goal of $2500 to support The Lunch Project.  Look for more fundraising opportunities to come later this year.  For more information on The Lunch Project, or to donate directly, go to http://thelunchproject.org.  Remember, to feed the entire school of 900+ children for one day, it only costs $85.00!
