Teacher Talk: Mrs. Konopka
Mrs. Konopka is one of our terrific third grade teachers. She grew up near Buffalo, New York. She graduated from Canisius College in 1988 with a BS in Management. After working several years in the banking industry, she decided to become a stay at home mom while her children were young. In 1999, her family relocated to Monroe in order to further her husband’s woodworking business.
During her daughter’s preschool years, she helped out in her classroom and her teaching career began. SheI went from parent helper to substitute teacher to teaching assistant to lead teacher in a few short years. Although she loved working with 4 year olds, she always thought about getting a job in a school system. That part of her career started in 2006 with a 5th grade tutoring job at Wesley Chapel Elementary. In 2007, Rocky River was built and she obtained a Kindergarten Teaching Assistant position alongside Mrs. Lana Hoffman. During her short time with Mrs. Hoffman, she learned so much and she realized that she wanted more out of her career. With the blessing of her family and co-workers, she made the major leap of going back to school and attended Wingate University’s Master of Teaching program, which she graduated from in December of 2010. Her teaching career started in 2009 as a Kindergarten teacher. Since then, she has taught first grade and is presently teaching third grade.
Even from a little girl, she enjoyed playing school and always pretended she was the teacher! One of her favorite teachers was in 6th grade. It was the first time she had a man as a teacher and it was one of her best years. He taught her that perseverance and confidence in your abilities can help you reach any goal you have. She thinks this helped me even more as an adult than as a child; especially during her return to school. She tries to instill this in all her students – if you believe in yourself, you can reach your goal as long as you try!
Anyone who knows Mrs. Konopka also knows about her family. Her class knows them personally because she uses them as examples in lessons all the time! SHe has been married to her husband Jeff for almost 24 years. They have 2 children: Justin (19) and Jessica (16), a black lab named Stanley, a cat named Cleo, and 2 guinea pigs named Lily and Smores! Since moving to North Carolina, they have found a love of the beach; especially Wilmington Beach. They also enjoy going for small excursions to explore all parts of North Carolina.
Mrs. Konopka loves being a Roadrunner because the colleagues she works with and the students she has the privilege of teaching are the best! She has made amazing friendships, receive daily hugs and smiles, and have seen wonderful things happen inside the walls of Rocky River over the years. What more could anyone ask for!
