Larry Sprinkle Visits Sun Valley Elementary School
Mr. Larry Sprinkle, morning meteorologist with WCNC, visited Sun Valley Elementary School on January 24, 2013, to speak with the fifth grade students and teachers. His visit was extremely timely due to the inclement weather that was anticipated the following day. The students listened intently as he described the many facets of predicting weather and the lifestyle of a meteorologist. They asked many questions which indicated their interest in weather and meteorology.
Brennon Smith, a student in Mrs. Hubbert’s class, was very excited by the visit. When asked what he liked best, he responded, “I like the fact that he goes outside and looks at the sky to check the weather before he goes on TV.” He was glad to have “freezing rain” explained since freezing rain is in our forecast.
Dr. Terri Cooper, Principal ofSun Valley Elementary School, thanked Mr. Sprinkle and presented him with several gifts including a school t-shirt, book bag and chair. Mr. Sprinkle signed autographs for the group. The following morning, Mr. Sprinkle mentioned his visit, displayed his SVES gifts, and described the students as “well behaved.”
All students in Union County Public Schools are seeing a change in their curriculum. The new common core state standards include weather and meteorology for fifth grade. At the conclusion of the school year, these students will take a Ready Test on Science where they will be assessed on these standards. Having Larry Sprinkle visit the school excited the students and brought this topic to life for the them.
