Men's Soccer Team Named State Champs

The CHS Men's Soccer team members show off their state championship rings.

The CHS men’s varsity soccer team received their state championship rings January 25, rewards from their November 17, 2012 victory in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A state championship against Carrboro. Obi Collins and Michael Proctor, both seniors, each scored goals and senior Thomas Vigdor scored twice with a final score of 4-1 that clenched the state title for the Cavaliers. Vigdor went on to be named Most Valuable Player of the game.

Coach Nelson Garner said, “Winning the state championship for our school has been a phenomenal experience for me and all the players, coaches and managers involved in our program. It's been so gratifying for me to see the players get recognized for their hard work in so many ways throughout the school and the community over the last 3 months.”

Senior Captain Riley Sloop said, “It was a confirmation once we got the rings – it made it real! It was surreal up to the point when we got the ring and then it was more of a feeling of accomplishment.”

“Every time I look at the ring on my hand and really feel it - it’s so heavy - it takes me back to that game. It’s an indescribable super-euphoric feeling!” said senior Thomas Vigdor.

Junior Captain Ethan Good said, “It was finally real! I mean, it was just so shocking that we won, and it wasn’t real until we actually got that symbol that said we were the champs!”

“For our players to receive their championship rings in front of the student body at a basketball game last week was the ultimate culmination of a magical season. We are very grateful to Ms. Warr, Mr. Barfield, and the Cuthbertson Booster Club for making the rings possible and creating a memory for these young men that will last a lifetime,” said Garner.

State champions who are seniors include: Riley Sloop (Captain), Bailey Thompson, Jason Drain, Michael Proctor, Obi Collins, David Page, Thomas Vigdor, and Jake Canup. Juniors include: Ethan Good (Captain), Corbin Mallette, David Moll, Evan Martinez, Jack Sosinski, Matthew LaFrance, Thomas Black, Josh Holler, and Seth Brown. Sophomores include Parker Freitag and Travis Whitt. Freshmen include Jake Souther and Kobi Sonsire. The team was coached by Nelson Garner, Jeff Paciolla, Jack Burch, and Garrett Vaughan.
