Antioch Celebrates Waitangi Day!
February 6th in New Zealand is a national holiday called Waitangi Day. It is a day in history where the British Crown and the native New Zealanders (Maori) signed a land treaty. Though there are still disputes about the discrepancies between the Maori and English version, New Zealanders celebrate Waitangi as the birth of a multicultural society.
New Zealanders celebrate Waitangi Day every year in the summer sun! Families get together and go to the beach, have picnics, attend Waitangi festivals and free concerts on this day.
Antioch celebrated Waitangi Day by having all the 5th graders go out into the whole school and teach every class about this important day in New Zealand. They taught K-4 information about the culture, the country and the Treaty of Waitangi itself. It was a great day for all and the 5th graders really enjoyed being the teachers for a change!
