Students Experience German Culture
Seven students from German language classes met at the Charlotte airport to depart for an eight day trip to southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, on July 8, 2013. The students were part of Mr. Daniel Sellner’s classes from both Cuthbertson and Weddington High Schools. They were joined by Mr. Mike Lee, a Global Business and Accounting teacher at Weddington, and a parent, Mr. Chris Beck.
Although the trip was barely over a week, the itinerary was quite full. Some of the highlights included: visiting the medieval walled town of Rothenburg; taking a tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, after which the Disney castle is modeled; having lunch in Liechtenstein, one of the smallest countries in the world; and swimming in an alpine lake near Lucerne Switzerland. Students had the opportunity to practice their German in each new place when eating at restaurants, shopping for souvenirs, or perhaps their favorite activity: ordering ice cream.
For many in the group, it was their first experience with international travel and learning about another culture firsthand. For rising CHS senior Robbie Robertson, it was a unique learning opportunity.
“I am glad I went on the trip. I left my comfort zone and it led me to fantastic places. It was the experience of a lifetime and I made new friends along the way. My favorite stop was Munich. It was a beautiful city with a lot to do and a lot to learn. This trip made me excited to see the world,” said Robbie.
