Heckaman selected for US Navy Educators at Sea Program
Deborah M. Heckaman, school psychologist in the Exceptional Children's Department at Kensington Elementary and Weddington Middle School, was recently selected as one of 12 educators to participate in the United States Navy Educators at Sea Program.
As a participant, she was invited to fly to Norfolk, Va. and experience life at sea. During her visit, she was flown to the US Harry S. Truman Naval Carrier, which was at sea.
She arrived via a C-2 Greyhound with an “arrested landing” on the carrier. Her team was greeted by the captain of the ship with salutes from the navy team members.
They were given a lengthy and detailed tour of the carrier departments, along with dinner with the Heads of the Departments. They were taken on the flight deck during the day, as well as the night, watching jets taking off and landing.
“What an amazing experience! After a full day and night aboard the carrier, we were ‘catapulted’ off the following day, back to Norfolk, Virginia,” she said.
“While this was an amazing, once-in-a-life-time experience for me, I was very proud of the men and women I met who were so gracious to all of us and that are proudly serving our country,” she added. “I salute them.”
