UCPS teacher assistants recognized at banquet
As a show of solidarity, the Union County Chapter of the North Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants decided this year they would not choose just one teacher assistant of the year, saying they were all the best of the best.
The annual banquet recognizes all teacher assistants who have been chosen as the top TA from their school and usually picks one to represent the county. At the 21st Annual Spring Banquet held on May 21, 2013, at South Piedmont Community College, however, they just recognized all of the individual school winners.
UCPS Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis thanked all the teacher assistants for their service to the children of Union County.
“After teaching school as long as I did, I’m well aware that we in middle school and high school have been direct beneficiaries of what you’ve done in elementary school,” Ellis said. “I want you to know that you matter to Mary Ellis and you matter to Union County Public Schools.”
The banquet’s guest speaker was Rob Jackson, the UCPS Community Relations and Communications Liaison. “When I think of teacher assistants, I think of walking into a classroom and seeing that child snuggled up to his teacher assistant who is helping him read for the very first time. And that student knew they were doing it – not because it was a job, but they were doing it because they cared,” he said. “So from the heart of a father, from someone who has watched the incredible things you do on a daily basis, I want to simply say, ‘Thank you’.”
Barbara Shinault, a five-year veteran teacher assistant at Walter Bickett Education Center, talked about her year serving as the 2012 Teacher Assistant of the Year.
“Thank you for allowing me to be your teacher assistant of the year,” Shinault said. “It’s been one of the highlights of my life and one that I am very proud of. It’s been an interesting journey that I'm glad you allowed me to travel.”
The UCNCATA also awarded three scholarships to UCPS students, all children of teacher assistants in Union County; Alyssa Horan of Marvin Ridge High School, William Hunter Lemmond of Central Academy of Technology and the Arts and Kaitlin Montgomery, formerly of Porter Ridge High School.
